Loud alone is not enough

Hearing better with hearing aids or hearing amplifiers?

from Jordan Wiele

Hearing aid, hearing amplifier, noise amplifier: Many people look around on the Internet for aids when they experience a decline in their hearing performance. And they find what they are looking for: Under names such as hearing aid for seniors, hearing amplifier and noise amplifier, a wide variety of devices are available there, which outwardly can hardly be distinguished from classic hearing solutions. As the price level rises - the range starts at around 20 euros and goes up to over 200 euros - there are often even several features on offer, from various attachments for fitting to the auditory canal to selectable programs for noise amplification outdoors or in closed rooms.

One thing these simple devices can certainly do is amplify the volume of ambient noise. But can they compensate for limited hearing performance in the long term? Without a hearing test, how can a truly suitable device be identified from an advertising description alone - which is often peppered with uninformative abbreviations? Questions that probably answer themselves.

Individual hearing improvement with a standardized device?

If you only want to hear louder, a hearing or noise amplifier may be useful. However, declining hearing is not only noticeable by the fact that affected persons perceive sounds, tones and voices more quietly. Depending on the individual impairment, it is also a matter of certain frequencies being heard only to a limited extent. Hearing ability also varies depending on the room and room sound, as well as the hearing situation, and is therefore also impaired in different ways.

Without a doubt, an extensive hearing test is a basic prerequisite for finding the individually required hearing solution. For example, if a person has difficulty hearing high frequencies, it does not make sense to simply increase the volume of all frequencies. One symptom of declining hearing is difficulty distinguishing between different sounds or voices heard at the same time. They are often only perceived as a kind of sound mush. Logically, simply raising the volume does not improve this situation either. And since many hearing amplifiers are sought from online providers: A hearing test on the Internet cannot analyze the type and extent of the hearing impairment experienced, because this requires different headphones and test sounds.

Glaring differences in quality

The suppliers of simple hearing amplifiers like to advertise with certain attributes: The sound is supposed to be low-noise, their device can amplify sounds by up to 30 dB, and the operating instructions are in German. These are all things that are absolutely self-evident in high-quality hearing solutions. There is no mention of an individual fitting or an accompanying service if the devices do not function as intended. And that raises another question: How is it possible to deliver high-quality technology at low prices that can still be used on a daily basis for years to come?

Possible cost trap

Simple hearing aids are available for less than 100 euros, but they are not automatically a cheap solution. The purchase price must be paid entirely out of your own pocket; health insurance companies do not cover the costs and do not provide a subsidy.

The alternative is simple: Many high-quality hearing solutions from KIND are available at zero cost, i.e. with full cost coverage by the health insurance. In addition, customers benefit from comprehensive service - and have a personal contact if the devices do not work as desired, a setting needs to be changed or a battery needs to be replaced.

Comprehensive advice

The most important point, however, is the comprehensive personal contact with a hearing aid acoustician: from the hearing test to the application to the health insurance company to the fitting of the hearing aids and finding the optimal personal setting, the hearing aid acoustician looks after his customers. And the devices do much more than just amplify the volume of sounds or voices. Thanks to different programs, they can adapt to the respective listening environment, from a concert to a conversation in a restaurant and a group discussion to the listening pleasure of watching television at home in the evening. Certain models can even be combined with the smartphone for perfect understanding during phone calls.

In an understandable and comprehensible way, our hearing care professionals explain the results of your hearing test in detail and, together with the client, find out which measures are best suited and recommended to optimise their hearing situation. KIND therefore offers two strong advantages: Hearing solutions at the highest technical level and personal support. Our goal is sustainable customer satisfaction - KIND advice has already received several independent awards and prizes.
